Music and Performing Arts

The Windham Middle School Music Department has numerous opportunities for students of all musical abilities to participate in.

 

Chorus: The WMS Chorus is a course that focuses on learning a variety of music. Students will learn about vocal production, music fundamentals, and sing a variety of songs. The chorus is split by grade (7.8) and participates in three performances a year. It's a great place for students to learn music, sing, and have fun!

Select Chorus: Select Chorus is an auditioned group for 7th and 8th graders who wish to join an extracurricular choir and learn more challenging music, as well as doing additional performances throughout the year. The Select chorus meets in the morning two days a week before school. Students must be enrolled in either chorus or band during the day in order to audition for Select Chorus. 

Concert Band: The concert bands meet by grade level, during the school day as part of the Unified Arts schedule. The ensembles focus on developing individual instrument technique, as well as other skills like melodic and rhythmic notation reading, balance, blend, and teamwork. The ensembles perform two concerts each year (winter and spring) and participate in the Great East Music Festival. There are opportunities for individuals who go above and beyond to participate in festivals such as the NHBDA Mid-Level Honors Festival, and the South Central District Middle School Festival.

Jazz Band: The Jazz Band is an extracurricular performance group that focuses on jazz, rock, and funk music. The group is made up of students in both 7th and 8th grade who audition to be in the group each September. The group meets two mornings each week before school, performs at the regularly scheduled winter and spring concerts and also has the opportunity for additional performances such as local Festivals of Trees and collaborative endeavors with the high school jazz band. Students who are in band or chorus during the school day are eligible to audition for Jazz Band.

Honors Band: The Honors Band is an extracurricular performance group and extension of the concert band classroom, performing similar literature. The group is made up of students in both 7th and 8th grade who audition to be in the group each September. The group meets two mornings each week before school, and performs at the regularly scheduled winter and spring concerts. Students who are in band or chorus during the school day are eligible to audition for Honors Band.

String Ensemble: String Ensemble is an extracurricular performance group that focuses on string instrument technique. The group is made up of students in 7th and 8th grade who have experience playing a string instrument. String Ensemble meets after school one day each week, and performs at the regularly scheduled winter and spring concerts. 

The Windham Middle School performing arts department performs in the state of the art auditorium at Windham High School. 

Drama Club: Drama Club is a group open to all students at Windham Middle School, no experience necessary! The club meets from mid-October through April, culminating with a full production of a junior Broadway Musical. Drama club meets three to four times each week after school.
